RENEWALS FOR ENHANCED STAR AND SENIOR EXEMPTIONS HAVE BEEN MAILED OUT
DEADLINE IS MARCH 1,2018
Types of STAR
Whether you receive the STAR exemption or the credit, there are two types of STAR benefits:
- available for owner-occupied, primary residences where the resident owners' and their spouses’ income is less than $500,000
- based on the first $30,000 of the full value of a home
- provides an increased benefit for the primary residences of senior citizens (age 65 and older) with qualifying incomes ($86,000 or less for the 2018-2019 school year)
- based on the first $66,800 of the full value of a home (for the 2018-2019 school year)
Note: Senior citizens receiving STAR may also be eligible for the senior citizens exemption.
Senior citizens exemption
Local governments and school districts in New York State can opt to grant a reduction on the amount of property taxes paid by qualifying senior citizens. This is accomplished by reducing the taxable assessment the senior's home by as much as 50%.
To qualify, seniors generally must be 65 years of age or older and meet certain income limitations and other requirements.
Please check with your local assessor, to determine which local options, if any, are in effect.
In the first year, use Form RP-467 Application for senior citizens' exemption from real property taxation
In subsequent years, use Renewal Form RP-467-Rnw
Instructions are also available.
